THE WONDERFUL WONDERFULNESS OF

WATTS TOWERS


These photos of Watts Towers were taken back in December of 2003
and I somehow forgot to post them on the old website until now.

Watts Towers (located in Los Angeles) are an intricate set of sculptural pieces
that were created on a residential lot by Simon Rodia between 1921 and 1955.

The sculptures are constructed from strong steel
pipes and rods, wrapped with wire mesh, coated with mortar,
and embedded with pieces of porcelain, tile and glass.

Simon Rodia did all the work himself, finding most
of his decorative material along the local train tracks.

Rodia's solitary creation is easily the greatest hunk
of artwork in Southern California and maybe the greatest
art west of the Mississippi but most definitely the
most fantastic art ever created in these
United States.

If you're ever in the Los Angeles area it would behoove you
to quickly check out the Watts Towers Arts Center and
the grand Towers themselves...sometimes they're closed
for years at a time so best to strike while the iron's hot!
